Downtown Decatur Walking Tour

The Young ICA&CA will be taking a walking tour of historic downtown Decatur, Georgia. We will start at 1pm with a tour of the Old Dekalb County Courthouse led by the Dekalb History Society, whose members helped with the restoration and revitalization of the 1918 structure. After the tour, we will go on a walking tour of surrounging downtown Decatur, discussing the architecture as well as Decatur's constant commitment to preservation of the past while enriching the city's urban fabric. After the tour, the group will head over to Leon's Full Service, a repurposed old gas station that is now one of Decatur's best bar/resturants.

CANstruction

One of our biggest events every year is participating in CANstruction. This year the theme was 'CAN-tegrity' and we decided to build a life size Bob the Builder. This year we won the award for 'Most Complete Meal' with the cans that we used. After the structures are taken down, all of the canned goods are donated to the Atlanta Food Bank. Thanks to our philanthropy chairs Rebecca Pendley and Phil Schaeffing and the rest of the team for all your hard work. The Annual Castleberry Hill Loft Tour

On Sunday, members of the Young ICA&CA went on the Castleberry Hill Loft Tour. This loft & warehouse district on the South end of downtown is an up & coming area that is home to many local Atlanta artists. The neighborhood also hosts an Art Stroll the second Friday of each month. http://www.castleberryhill.org/artstroll.html

We started with a lunch at No Mas Cantina, the neighborhood Mexican restaurant, then toured around Castleberry Hill. This year's loft tour featured 8 different lofts that really showcased what it is like to live in an urban historical district. http://www.castleberryhill.org/lofttour/

Glenridge Hall- A Country Estate in Atlanta

On Saturday evening, the southeast chapter of the ICA&CA hosted a membership event at Glenridge Hall. Current ICA&CA members, Young ICA&CA members, students and guests mingled during the cocktail hour and then were treated to a private tour of the home. Thank you to the Young ICA&CA members that served as docents for the tour. It was a wonderful evening exploring and touring one of Atlanta's most beautiful historic homes. As a side note, the house is actually featured regularly on the CW's 'Vampire Diaries.'

Great Room of Glenridge Hall

Glenridge Hall was the country estate built in 1929 for the Glenn family (of Glen Memorial Chapel on Emory campus and other such beautiful structures). Thomas Glenn had the house designed soon after, and possibly to compete with, Altanta's other Tudor-style home Callenwolde, which was owned by his sister, Flora Glenn Candler. Designed by the firm Cooper and Cooper (Sam Inman Cooper was of the Inman family- another of Atlanta's historical families), the house was meant to be an escape from the city as well as a stage for entertaining guests.

The event was also a welcoming party for the new class of Georgia Tech MS of Classical Design students who arrived in Atlanta this fall.

Canstruction Kick Off Meeting Recap

We had a very successful kick off and brainstorming meeting at Manuel's Tavern last Thursday night. Over snacks, drinks, and a little bit of college football we produced a pretty long list of ideas for our upcoming Canstruction design. Now beings the process of narrowing down our lists and producing rough sketches.

Castleberry Hill Loft Tour

The Young ICA&CA has a tripped planned to visit the Castleberry Hill area of Atlanta- located near the Georgia Dome. This is one of the city's more trendy unknowns, offering many art galleries, unique boutiques and exciting lofts.

If you're interested in exploring with us, we will be meeting for lunch on September 27th, 2009 at No Mas Cantina at noon and then taking the Castleberry Hill Loft Tour 2009. Grady Hospital's Goddard Chapel

This past weekend, the southeast chapter of the ICA&CA held a reception at Grady Hospital's Goddard Chapel. The Chapel was originally designed by Philip Trammel Shutze in 1958, a team of local architects, including Jonathan LaCrosse, Steven Markey, and Clay Ulmer, and builders donated their time and efforts to revitalize the chapel. CanStruction Kickoff 2009

Have you ever played with your food? If so, we need you! For the third year running, the Young ICA+CA will participate in CanStruction- an international design competition to rise food stores for the needy while stimulating creative competition between the building disciplines.

Friends and members are meeting at Manuel's Tavern for a Brainstorming Meeting and Happy Hour to kickoff this year's competition. Join us at 7pm Thursday, September 10th, 2009 to toss around food puns and structural challenges over light appetizers.

Manuel's Tavern is located at 602 North Highland Ave. Atlanta, GA 30307. We hope to see you there!

Historic Macon, Georgia

On Saturday May 30th, members and friends of the Young ICA&CA carvanned down to experience one of Georgia's truly great old cities. We went for a guided tour of the Hay House, visited Rose Hill Cemetary (resting place of Neel Reid), and had local and Georgia Tech Masters student David take us on a special tour around the historic streets of Macon.

Oakland Cemetary Sketching Day

It was a beautiful day at Atlanta's Historical Oakland Cemetary- the perfect crisp weather for sketching and measuring. About 18 friends and members of the ICA&CA and the Young ICA&CA met and explored Oakland Cemetary- Atlanta's 88 acre Victorian "garden cemetery."
